4WDs Collision

Four people are recovering in hospital following a head-on collision between two 4x4 vehicles in the Stockton sand dunes yesterday.
A Westpac rescue helicopter spokesman said two cars were coming over a crest on opposing sides of a large dune when they collided about 3pm.
A 17-year-old passenger of one of the cars suffered cuts and abrasions in the crash while a 24-year-old driver of one of the vehicles suffered chest injuries.
Both were flown by Westpac rescue helicopter to the John Hunter Hospital.
Two other males, aged 26 and 17, were also transported to the John Hunter Hospital by ambulance while another passenger was treated at the scene by paramedics for minor scratches.
All four men were listed as being in a stable condition.
Both vehicles were extensively damaged in the crash.

The 26-year-old male, Daniel, is my sister's boyfriend. Thankfully, he has no broken bones and has left the hospital. However, he is still in pain as he has injuries to his chest. Please pray for him.

The fifth person is now in hospital, but in a stable condition.

I went there as a baby, and I don't remember a thing! This time though, we got a Homeschool discount (25% off!), a couple of cool rides, and (wait for it, wait for . . . - excuse me, where's the drumroll?) . . . A swim with the Dolphins!!!! It was so cool! There was eight girls, two dolphins, and two instructors. We were split up into two groups, one with each dolphin. I was with Tyson; the other was called Cyrus.
We got them to do jumps, tail-walking, and lots of other fun things!!

After the Lennox Head Homeschool Camp, we drove up to Coolangatta. Coolangatta was about an hour away from where we were, and is on the Queensland and New South Wales border. It as actually quite funny; travelling interstate all week!

We (Mum and me!) picked Dad up from the Coolangatta airport [Helpful Hint: ALWAYS update your Nav-Man, Tom-Tom, or GPS BEFORE you go on holidays!!{as we got lost}]. I have learnt to keep quiet when Mum is telling the GPS off!!

I unfortunately caught a bug, which EVERYONE from homeschool camp got!(and some poor people had to go back home on the train!! poor things!). I will spare you the horrors and disgusting details of the Saturday, and will move on to a new subject!
Now, as the dialog has finished, ATTENTION! FORWARD MARCH! TO THE MARIAN VALLEY!

Homeschool Camp . . .(yes there is such a thing!)

Hello!
As some of you know, I have been away (before the school holidays) at camp and up north.
I will post about Queensland later (probably next week), however now, I am going to put about the Homeschool camp I went to . . .

Random dancing - I'm the one in the white top,
pretty skirt, and grey tights {Anna is wearing
the pretty dress, which I have just like it . . .

I live in Medowie, 40 minutes from Newcastle, and Lennox Head (where the camp was at) is 6 or so hours north. Mum couldn't drive that far, and I can't blame her! We stayed at a friends house overnight [Mrs. Hassett, I hope you enjoy this publicity!] and awoke with the sun on a lovely Monday! the Hassetts have the most AWESOME LIBRARY!!!!!! I fell in love with it!!! there was books everywhere!!! cool!!!!(sigh)!!!!

We drove down Princess and Jelly Bean, and 2 hours later, we were at camp!!! We tumbled out of the car, and tried to find our friends before out mums called us back to help unpack.

Me: purple ring; Princess: blue ring; Anna: green ring;
and Jelly Bean: red ring

Our priests were Fr. Risso (I think thats how his name is spelt!) and Fr. Gabriel. We had teams: Red Bosco, Blue Assisi, and Green Mackillop. I was in Mackillop; Go go Mackillop Green!

Spiritual talks, mass, and choir singing, exploring rock pools, kite flying, sports day, burying other people in sand; all part of the experience!

well, Jelly Bean, Princess, Brigid, Me, Anna, and
Rosias' sister,

Each night events, such a quizzes, games and a talent show, were held. on the Thursday night there was a bonfire; down at the beach (did I mention that it was a 2 minute walk to the beach?) and out in the field.

All heaps of fun, and I am going to another camp (down south) this week!!! Blog later!

Taffy and Cinnamon

Taffy and Cinnamon are my new bunnies!!!! it started with my piano teacher, Chanel . . .
Her family breeds Nederland dwarf rabbits and I said to Mum "Mum, I want a bunny!" in that really annoying whinging voice - just joking!!!
Anyway, I discussed things over with Mum and Dad, dah dah dah dadah, (1,2, skip a few, 99, 100!!!!) blah blah blah, and they said YES!!!!(well, really it was dad who had to say yes - Mum agreed almost straight away!)!! We decided to get them AFTER Qld - great place, wonderful time, but that's for another post!
We got back on Friday night - bit late: quarter to nine! - stayed at Grandma and Grandads' Saturday night 'till Monday afternoon, and then today!!! Calls were taken and made, and around 1 o'clock we were at Chanels' house!!! Greeted by her family, we went down to the back of the house. After pats and questions, we left with my beautiful bunnies in a tall cardboard box (filled with torn up paper and a old kitchen towel, just in case you were wondering). Getting the bunnies home was one thing - getting them in the Hutch is another!!

Do you have a hole in YOUR racket?

A couple of weeks ago, me and dad were playing Totem tennis, and dad kept on accidentally missing the ball. I was about to say "Dad, do you have a hole in your racket?" when dad swung the racket, a we heard an almighty, earsplitting THWACK! and dads' tennis racket broke! it was one of the old ones (my first pole got really rusty and we couldn't use it), so it was okay! But how ironic is that?

Little Old Lady and the Atheist

There was a little old lady who would come out every morning on the steps of her front porch, raise her arms to the sky and shout, "Praise the Lord!"

Well, one day an atheist moved into the house next door. Over time, he became irritated at the little old lady. So every morning he would step out onto his front porch and yell after her, "There is no God!"

Time passes with the two of them carrying on this way every day. Then one morning in the middle of winter, the little old lady stepped onto her front porch and shouted, "Praise the Lord! Lord, I have no food and I am hungry. Please provide for me, oh Lord!"

The next morning she stepped onto her porch and there were two huge bags of groceries sitting there. "Praise the Lord!" she cried out. "He has provided groceries for me!" The atheist jumped out of the hedges and shouted, "There is no Lord. I bought those groceries!" The little old lady threw her arms into the air and shouted, "Praise the Lord! He has provided me with groceries and He made the devil pay for them!"

Many a person indeed has taken on noble enterprises and has been willing to make great sacrifices, offer their goods and even suffer death for the greater glory of God and the exaltation of the Holy Church. But then, before the laughter of their peers, for fear of meeting a condoning smile or a sarcastic word, the heroic resolution collapses. The sign of cross is abandoned at the important business lunch, the ladies tea, the university or high school lunchroom. The resolute 13-year-old girl who has determined to dress modestly turns 16, and the pressure of her peers is suddenly more than she can bear: she dons blue jeans and tank tops and puts aside her old promises. Young men leave off praying the Rosary, serving Mass, avoiding vulgar conversations and bad companions because they don’t want to seem like “nerds” or “losers”… At certain functions, the scapular is slipped into the pocket…

And why? For fear of a laugh. For fear of the laughter of a serving woman, St. Peter denied Our Lord. How many more denials have been made so that we can adapt to a public opinion that does not censure us - or fall into a life of being “normal” and “fitting in”?

You never know when you might need to check this!
A Mirror or a 2-Way Glass?
How can you tell when you are in a room, restroom, motel etc. with a mirror or a 2-way glass?
Here's how: I thought it was quite interesting! And I know in about 30 seconds you're going to do what I did and find the nearest mirror.
Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not? A policewoman who travels all over the US and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on.
When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror (i.e., they can see you, but you can't see them)? There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms . It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by looking at it.

Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is GENUINE mirror. Story of the Praying Hands

Many of us would have seen the picture of “The Praying Hands”, also present in many Christian homes, but would almost certainly not have heard the moving story behind this popular picture.

Here is the story.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE OF THE PRAYING HANDS

Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived
a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order merely to keep food
on the table for this mob, the father and head of the household, a
goldsmith by profession, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade
and any other paying chore he could find in the neighborhood.

Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of the elder children,
Albrecht and Albert, had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their
talent for art, but they knew full well that their father would never be
financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the
Academy.

After many long discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two
boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would
go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his
brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won
the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the
other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or,
if necessary, also by laboring in the mines.

They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer
won the toss and went off to Nuremberg.

Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four
years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an
immediate sensation. Albrecht's etchings, his woodcuts, and his oils
were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he
graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his
commissioned works.

When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held
a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht's triumphant
homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and
laughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at the head of the
table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice
that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition. His closing words
were, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn.
Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care
of you."

All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where
Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head
from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over, "No ..no
...no ..no."

Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced
down the long table at the faces he loved, and then, holding his hands
close to his right cheek, he said softly, "No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look ... look what four years in the
mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed
at least once, and lately I have been suffering from arthritis so badly
in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast,
much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a
brush. No, brother ...for me it is too late."

More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durer's hundreds of
masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, water colors,
charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great
museum in the world, but the odds are great that you, like most people,
are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer's works. More than merely
being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in
your home or office.

One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed,
Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brother's abused hands with palms
together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful
drawing simply "Hands," but the entire world almost immediately opened
their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love
"The Praying Hands."

The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second
look.

Miracles with dolls and hot water bottles

This is a story written by a doctor who worked in Africa .
It was sent to me by a friend.

One night I had worked hard to help a mother

in the labor ward; but in spite of all we could

do, she died, leaving us with a tiny, premature

baby and a crying two-year-old daughter. We

would have difficulty keeping the baby alive;

as we had no incubator (we had no electricity

to run an incubator).

We also had no special feeding facilities.

Although we lived on the equator, nights were

often chilly with treacherous drafts. One student

midwife went for the box we had for such

babies and the cotton wool that the baby

would be wrapped in.

Another went to stoke up the fire and fill a

hot water bottle. She came back shortly in

distress to tell me that in filling the bottle, it

had burst (rubber perishes easily in tropical

climates)..

'And it is our last hot water bottle!' she

exclaimed. As in the West, it is no good crying

over spilled milk, so in Central Africa it might

be considered no good crying over burst

water bottles.

They do not grow on trees, and there are no

drugstores down forest pathways.

'All right,' I said, 'put the baby as near the

fire as you safely can, and sleep between the

baby and the door to keep it free from drafts

Your job is to keep the baby warm.'

The following noon, as I did most days, I went

to have prayers with any of the orphanage

children who chose to gather with me. I gave

the youngsters various suggestions of things

to pray about and told them about the tiny

baby. I explained our problem about keeping

the baby warm enough,mentioning the hot

water bottle, and that the baby could so easily

die if it got chills. I also told them of the

two-year-old sister, crying because her mother

had died.

During prayer time, one ten -year-old girl,

Ruth, prayed with the usual blunt conciseness

of our African children. 'Please, God' she

prayed, 'Send us a hot water bottle today. It'll

be no good tomorrow, God, as the baby will

be dead, so please send it this afternoon.'

While I gasped inwardly at the audacity of the

prayer, she added, 'And while You are about it,

would You please send a dolly for the little girl

so she'll know You really love her?'

As often with children's prayers, I was put on

the spot. Could I honestly say 'Amen?' I just

did not believe that God could do this.

Oh, yes, I know that He can do everything;

the Bible says so. But there are limits, aren't

there? The only way God could answer this

particular prayer would be by sending me a

parcel from the homeland. I had been in Africa

for almost four years at that time, and I had

never, ever, received a parcel from home.

Anyway, if anyone did send me a parcel, who

would put in a hot water bottle? I lived on the

equator!

Halfway through the afternoon, while I was

teaching in the nurses' training school, a

message was sent that there was a car at my

front door. By the time I reached home, the

car had gone, but there on the verandah was

a large 22-pound parcel. I felt tears pricking

my eyes. I could not open the parcel alone, so

I sent for the orphanage children..

Together we pulled off the string, carefully undoing each knot.

We folded the paper, taking care not to tear it unduly

Excitement was mounting. Some thirty or

forty pairs of eyes were focused on the large

cardboard box. From the top, I lifted out

brightly-colored, knitted jerseys. Eyes

sparkled as I gave them out. Then there were

the knitted bandages for the leprosy patients,

and the children looked a little bored..

Then came a box of mixed raisins and sultanas -

that would make a batch of buns for the

weekend.

Then, as I put my hand in again, I felt the.....

could it really be?

I grasped it and pulled it out. Yes, a brand new

rubber hot water bottle. I cried.

I had not asked God to send it; I had not truly

believed that He could.

Ruth was in the front row of the children. She

rushed forward, crying out, 'If God has sent

the bottle, He must have sent the dolly, too!'

Rummaging down to the bottom of the box,

she pulled out the small, beautifully-dressed

dolly. Her eyes shone! She had never doubted!

Looking up at me, she asked, 'Can I go over

with you and give this dolly to that little girl,

so she'll know that Jesus really loves her?'

'Of course,' I replied!

That parcel had been on the way for five

whole months, packed up by my former

Sunday school class, whose leader had heard

and obeyed God's prompting to send a

hot water bottle, even to the equator.

And one of the girls had put in a dolly for an

African child - five months before, in answer

to the believing prayer of a ten-year-old to

bring it 'that afternoon.'

'Before they call, I will answer.'

SCOPE this out: science is everywhere.
It’s behind the technology we use, the food we eat, the houses we live in, the clothes we wear, the medicine we take, the bridges we cross, the roads we travel, the athletes who become our sporting heroes and the health of the planet we call home.

Now there’s a science show for kids called Scope to explain the science that’s all around us.

Scope is a half hour of fast, funny and informative scientific entertainment for children aged 8-14 years. Each week Scope explores a different theme to discover the science behind everything. Each week, host, Dr Rob tackles a different topic, tears it apart, explores it, relates it to a child’s life and finally catapults the concept into the realms of technology and the future.

Dr Rob is not alone in his quest for all the answers and is joined by Julia, who seeks out cool experiments and scientific facts. Along for the ride are the scientists themselves who present many of the stories about their research and discoveries.

Scope’s mission is for its audience to never stop questioning how the world works to make the impossible become possible. Scope answers the how and the why, but more importantly, the ‘what if’ as it makes the ordinary extraordinary - under the SCOPE.

The Team

Dr Rob Bell
The term “mad scientist” may well be appropriate for the CSIRO’s Dr Robert Bell. He’ll tackle a hot vindaloo to explain chillies, eat a raw fish to better understand dolphins or spend a day on the slopes to better comprehend the physics of skiing (someone’s got to do it!). A madcap but dedicated scientist, Dr Rob gives his all to uncovering and explaining the ways and whys of our ever amazing world.
Growing up on a pineapple farm on the Sunshine Coast, Rob became passionate about the environment, and in particular the impact humans have on it and its resources.
Dr Rob, achieved his Bachelor of Science with Honours plus his PhD in the area of Materials Chemistry (awarded in 2000) at the University of Queensland, where he also held the prestigious title of “President – The Chocolate Appreciation Society” with over 700 sweet-toothed members.
Formerly Dr Rob was a science education officer for the CSIRO, enticing and educating our young minds in the many and varied fields of science, perfect training for SCOPE.

Julia Cleghorn
As soon as Julia learnt to talk, she was asking questions about the world around her.
Since then, she has done everything possible to find out the answers. Her love of science started at an early age and she has been questioning, and answering, and talking ever since.
Originally from Melbourne, Julia received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne before heading to the Nation's Capital to join the circus; well, the Science Circus that is. As part of this travelling group, she brought the fascinating and often explosive world of science to every corner of Australia.
Julia currently presents the weekly Scope experiments where she uses everyday stuff to make, demonstrate and explain all things science.

Ted Petrie – Newscaster
Ted Theodore Petrie has been a familiar face to Australian television audiences for over 30 years.
Legend has it that this icon of TV journalism was born with a microphone in his hand and that his first words were his now immortal catch cry, "It's great to be with me."
Ted began his career as the rural reporter for the Launceston Times but he had far greater ambitions and it wasn't long before he had become the news anchor of Newcastle Tonight on UHF channel 31. Nominated 16 years a row for the Logie for best regional news anchor*, Ted has read the autocue on some of the biggest stories of our time including The Berlin Wall coming down and Bec and Lleyton's wedding. Ted now continues his very unique, award nominated newscasting style on Channel Ten's Scope.

The real stars of Scope are the scientists and experts themselves who present stories about their research and discoveries in a simple, informative and fun way.

Such a dramatic title! But this is my last post as a 12-year-old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so excited!!! In 3 hours and 7 minutes it will be my birthday, that means in 17 hours and 77 minutes, I will be 13. I was born at 1:10 in the afternoon. whats really weird is that my sisters Louise was born at7:11 and Kristie was born 9:10, and my brother was born at 2:52 in the afternoon!!!

The Strauss Family

The Strauss family must be included among Vienna’s greatest

and most important musicians. The ruling family and

aristocracy of this city loved the arts, especially music.

In view of this fact, Vienna produced the most magnificent

waves of musical genius anywhere

over a span of three centuries.

The first wave included Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and the senior Strauss. The second wave: Brahms, Mahlar, Richard Strauss1, and the younger Johann Strauss. Finally the third wave: the twentieth-century geniuses – Schoenberg, Berg and Webern.

Johann2 Strauss, Sr. lived for his orchestra and sadly, not for his family. He was restless, demanding and tyrannical3. Even so, his sons idolized him. Strauss, Sr. created cheerful and happy music. His ‘Rachetzy march’ was his greatest success. It is the unofficial Austrian national anthem.

Johann, Sr. didn’t want any of his children to become musicians, but encouraged by their mother Anna; his three sons, Johann, Jr., Josef, and Eduard4, studied music and contributed more to the waltz 5 than their father did.

Strauss, Sr. was called the Waltz King. He joined Joseph Lanner, in 1826, and they began to formalize the Viennese Waltz that Lanner had created earlier. They formed this into the kind of waltzes that we know today.

After his father left his family, Johann, Jr. became the new ‘Waltz King’. He was already writing music, in ¾ time, at age 6. This is an amazing accomplishment, as it is an extremely difficult time to play, let alone write in.

Beethoven6 often complained that “the Viennese were Waltz
mad!” Maybe he had a point. Many waltz enthusiasts danced
through the night until early morning, and the large elegant dance
halls of Vienna often over flowed. These magnificent dance halls
could hold over 500 people.

It was not unusual to find Johann Jr. writing music at night and usually under stress. In ill health, and urged by his wife, Jetti, he handed over the responsibility of the family orchestra to his brother Josef.

Reluctantly, his brother, took over conducting, yet handled it with outstanding success. Josef also wrote beautiful waltzes and was called ‘the Schubert of the Waltz”. Unfortunately, Josef died young of brain tumour. After Josef’s untimely and upsetting death, Eduard directed the family orchestra.

In Johann Jr.’s famous operetta masterpieces, “Die Fledermous” and “the Gypsy Baron”, he took ballroom to the theatre. Jr.’s music remained fresh and young. His genius went far beyond the realm of light dance, inspiring many great composers who wrote waltzes.

When Waltz King Johann Strauss, Jr. died in 1899, he had composed nearly five hundred works – waltzes, polkas, marches, operettas, and more.

Vienna and the world, owes much to the Strauss family. If it wasn’t for their passion and hard work we would not have the music we have today.

Here is something from last months newspaper:
Women in disguise

During the early days, ballet was only performed by men, as were acting of any from on stage usually done by men. If a woman wanted to dance or to act on stage, she first had to disguise herself as a man, before she was allowed to perform. If a female role had to be performed, slender men or boys were dressed in ladies clothing, and wore wigs. Ballet dancer’s donned masks to portray their character further. The costumes were elaborate, and it is a wonder that the performers managed to dance in them at all. After that many more ballet schools were opened across the world. Ballet remains a popular form of art, and a popular sport. Many sportsmen and women use ballet in training for their actual sport. Pelé – a famous soccer player used ballet to warm up before matches. Many ice skating performers and gymnasts use ballet in both training and choreographing their sport.

Recipe

The Recipe for Living the Christian life Cake is as follows:

 4 cups of Love

 1 ¾(250g) cups of a Generous Heart

 1 tablespoon of Poverty

 several dashes of Kindness

 150g Charity

 3 tablespoon of Joy

 1 cup of Generosity

 250g punnet Peaceberrys

 1 cup of Modesty

 2 cups of Patience

 Possessions( adjust to your needs)

Combine Love, Patience, Generosity, and Poverty in a large bowl. Add Modesty. In a separate bowl mix Joy, and Kindness, with 100g Charity, then add to other bowl. Mix until well combine, and then pour into a tin of Generous Heart. Cook until light and fluffy. Whip the rest of Charity, and cut the Peaceberrys in half. When cake is cooled, add the whipped Charity, and the Peaceberrys on top, and dust sparingly with Possessions.

The Tigris and the Euphrates rivers are located in Turkey, and the Tigris has a latitude 33o north, a longitude 91 o east, and its length 1900 km. While the Euphrates River has a latitude 39o north, and a longitude 38o east, and its length is 526 km.

Some of the cities on these rivers include Cizre, al-Qurnah, Shattal al-Arab, Mosul, Samarra, and ruins of the great Mesopotamian cities such as Nineveh, Calah, Ashur, Seleucia, Ctesiphon, Baghdad.

Notably, the countries they run though are Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. They rise in southeastern Turkey at Lake Hazar in the Taurus Mountains and flows southeast for about 450 km.

Typically, these rivers are used for drinking, fishing, and trading with other countries.

The Geebung

The fruit of the Geebung is not a berry, even though it looks like one. It is really drupe. A drupe is soft, fleshy, and has a stone in the middle of it, and inside the stone is a seed.

The small, yellow flowers grow in clusters and are very heavy. Their branches are often seen hanging right down, with the weight of the flowers bearing down upon them. The flowers fall very easily and quickly, and have large, smooth leaves that have a twist in the stem so they face sideways to the sun. The Geebung is in the Waratah family, flowers only in the summer, and has 80 species.
